Abstract

Due to a paucity of quantitative Raman methods in the literature, we wish to describe a rapid Raman method for determining the percent conversion of polyacrylamide (1) to poly-N-dimethylaminomethylacrylamide (II), via the Mannich reaction. The method has been developed using the ratio of Raman bands at 1212 and 1112 cm−1 with respect to a minimum at 1165 cm−1 (Fig. 1). The 1212 and 1112 cm−1 bands represent complex C—N stretching modes of the R—(O∥C)—NH—R and R—(O∥C)—NH2 moieties, respectively.
