Abstract
In the conventional Raman source using Hg 4358-Å excitation, it is necessary to place an optical filter between the lamp and the sample to remove radiation in the violet and near uv regions of the spectrum which might decompose the sample. At one time, a saturated solution of sodium nitrite was almost universally employed for this purpose but this has now been largely superseded by solutions of aromatic nitrocompounds such as <i>m</i>-dinitrobenzene and the nitrotoluenes. Although these are more efficient filters than sodium nitrite, they suffer from a disadvantage; their transmission at 4358 Å falls off markedly after a few hours irradiation owing to photodecomposition. Frequent renewal is necessary.
