A Method of Producing Sturdy Specimens of Pressed Powders for Use in X-ray Spectrochemical Analysis

Abstract

Many investigators have been confronted with the problem of preparing sturdy pressed powder specimens for use in x-ray spectrochemical analysis. Some have ground or otherwise mixed the powdered material with a binder, such as boric acid or cellulose powder prior to pressing in a mold. This dilutes the sample and causes some added uncertainty. One never knows whether the binder is evenly dispersed throughout the sample. Some investigators have pressed powders on a backing of boric acid, cellulose powder, or Boraxo.
