Abstract
A rapid infrared method has been developed for the quantitative determination of carbazole in industrial grade anthracene. A sample is dissolved in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloro-ethane (TCE) and the intensity of the N-H stretching vibration at 3465 cm−1 is used to calculate the carbazole content in the 0.1-7% range. Various approaches have been reported in the literature <i>(1-9)</i> involving colorimetric, spectroscopic, nitrimetric, and polarographic techniques which are time-consuming and of limited reliability or availability. The method to be described has the advantage of being rapid and quite specific for carbazole.
