Abstract
Distortion of the first- and higher-order spectra, associated with oblique radiation entering a slitless grating spectrograph, is discussed. Equations are derived relating the film plane coordinates of the image at any wavelength to those of the zero-order image. It is shown that the locus of points of all these images is a hyperbola whose constants are ultimately determined by the focal length and the direction cosines of the incoming radiation. A formula for the local plate factor is derived also, and limitations of its applicability are discussed. The effect of skewness between the plane of the grating and that of the plate is noted, and a criterion for determining specifications for this parameter is presented.
