Abstract

Feature Issue on Passive Optical Network Architectures and Technologies

Since the number of broadband access subscribers is rapidly increasing in Japan, a cost-effective and high-speed optical access system is needed. The GE-PON system can satisfy these demands. Although GE-PON layer 1 and layer 2 are specified in IEEE Std 802.3 (IEEE, 2005), the GE-PON system needs higher layer functions to satisfy the requirements raised by accommodated services and/or operation policies. We reveal the functions necessary for real operation, describe the design concept of each function, and evaluate a developed system.
