Abstract

Recent developments in the generation and compression of optical pulses in the bluegreen spectral regime [1] now enable the direct investigation of fundamental dynamics in a variety of interesting molecular systems. In this paper we describe a unique laser system which generates 10 fs pulses in the blue-green. This laser system is used to resolved the kinetics of the primary event in vision, the cis-trans isomerization of the retinal chromophore in the pigment rhodopsin [2].
