Abstract

Strong self-phase-modulation (SPM) in single-mode optical fibers can be utilized for efficient mode locking of solid state lasers. Stable femtosecond pulse generation in these systems calls for 1) passive amplitude modulation and 2) balancing SPM and group-velocity dispersion (GVD) in the laser cavity. We present different cavity configurations complying with these requirements, and report on experimental results obtained with Nd:glass lasers.
