Hybrid and Passive Mode Locking in Coupled-Cavity Lasers

Abstract

Many of the notable refinements of ultrashort pulse optical sources in recent years have involved the exploitation of extracavity or intracavity nonlinear media. In particular, the initial demonstrations of the enhanced mode locking that could be achieved with soliton (1) or the more generalised non-soliton (2) coupled-cavity lasers have led to a range of significant system advances. The latter technique, which is now more widely employed than the soliton-laser counterpart and is variously described as coupled-cavity mode-locking (CCM) (3) or additive-pulse mode-locking (APM) (4) or interferential mode-locking (IML) (5) is the subject of this presentation.
