Abstract
We report in this paper on observations of frequency conversion and short pulse formation in a glass fiber nonlinear oscillator. Two nonlinear effects, namely (i) four wave mixing (FWM) and (ii) Raman interaction take place in the conversion from pump to Stokes power. Pulses of a minimum width of less than 100 fsec with little wings are obtained at the Stokes wavelength of ~ 1.38 μm. The average power from this pulse train is ~ 4 mW from which a peak power of 480 W is estimated. The pulses from the oscillator are compared to pulses generated transiently and the influence of feedback on pulse shortening is discussed.
