Phase Wrapping in Phase Retrieval Caused by Camera Noise

Abstract

Phase wrapping in phase retrieval recovered wavefronts has been observed. The wavefronts used to generate the images used in the phase retrieval algorithm were very nearly flat, as confirmed by Strehl analysis of the images. Noise in the normally dark part of the image was the cause of the the phase wrapping. A modification to the phase retrieval image plane constraints allowed for recovery of the wavefront without the need to perform a phase unwrapping step. With this method reproducibility of better than 97 % was achieved.
