Hybrid Geometric and Probabilistic Shaping; Is It Really Necessary?

Abstract

We have optimized 4D modulation formats up to 12 bits/symbol with hybrid probabilistic and geometric shaping. For high-order cardinalities, the results suggest that hybrid shaping is necessary.
