Abstract
Recently, Nisoli et al., 1 have shown that the use of hollow optical fibers permits efficient broadening of the spectrum of an ultrashort laser pulse due to self-phase modulation (SPM). Due to the possibility to use highpower laser pulses and large propagation lengths, the hollow-fiber technique offers much promise for optical frequency conversion through coherent wave mixing and harmonic generation. Durfee III el al.2 have demonstrated that this technique provides an opportunity to achieve a high efficiency of optical frequency conversion in third-harmonic (TH) generation and parametric four-wave mixing, stimulating intensive investigations in this direction.3
