Abstract
It is often anticipated that bulk metals do not yield any significant nonlinearity χ<3> in the infrared region. For example, the nonlinearities χ(3)(3ω, ω, ω, ω) responsible for the coherent process of third-harmonic generation are rather small. However, here we report the results of direct measurements of the cubic nonlinearities in bulk gold, aluminum, and nickel, which are responsible for the incoherent specular inverse Faraday effect (SIFE).
