Abstract
We have confined as many as 104 85Rb atoms in an optical-dipole force trap as far as 65 nm from atomic resonance. Confinement times of 200 ms, limited only by background-gas collisions, were obtained without additional cooling. In spite of this large detuning, we obtained strong confinement of the atoms. For example, with a detuning of 19 nm from resonance, we typically confined the atoms to a cylinder 150 µm long and 2 µm in radius, and the radial vibrational frequency of the atoms in the confining potential was 25 kHz. At the same time the photon scatter rate of 400 s−1 and a recoil heating rate of 110 vibrational- quanta s−1 were very small because of the large detuning.
