Abstract
New applications of semiconductor lasers in point-to-point communications, networking/ switching, and instrumentation have placed increasingly stringent demands on laser spectral properties. In addition lo single-longitudinal-mode operation, low chirping with high-speed modulation capabilities, low phase noise, and wavelength tunability are all desirable or required for advanced wavelength division multiplexed and coherent (heterodyne) systems. While it has been suggested for some time that quantum well lasers should offer improved performance In this regard, only recently have growth and fabrication techniques in the In- GaAsP/InP system advanced to a point where these advantages are realizable.
