Nonresonant multiphoton ionization of alkaline earth atoms with intense 532-and 1064-nm radiation

Abstract

We report results of the nonresonant multiphoton ionization of magnesium and calcium atoms in an intense laser field. The intensities used were ≤ 1013 W/cm2. The experimental apparatus was described in detail previously.1 Briefly, the fundamental and second harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser is used in the experiments. The linearly polarized beam is focused into an atomic beam vacuum chamber by a 100-mm focal length lens. The electrons ejected in the ionization process propagate freely along a 30-cm drift region and are collected by a multichannel plate detector.
