Abstract

We have obtained for the first time, we believe, two-photon excitation spectra of an IR ligand field transition (Fig. 1). The zero-phonon line of the 3A2g3T2g transition of cubic MgO:Ni2+ occurs at 8002 cm−1, and the vibronic sideband extends to 11,000 cm−1. Thus the excitation wavelengths ranged from 2.50 to 1.82 µm. The tunable IR laser light was generated by Raman shifting the output of a Nd:YAG pumped dye laser with a multiple-pass hydrogen cell.1 The light was filtered with a Ge polarizer and focused to ~2 GW/cm2 in the crystal. Two-photon absorption was detected by monitoring broadband emission centered at 1.7 µm from the 3T2 state with a 77-K Ge photodiode and preamplifier.
