Amplified spontaneous emission at visible wavelengths in an infrared-pumped neodymium-doped optical fiber

Abstract

Emission in the blue and red at 496 and 633 nm has been observed in a neodymium-doped single- mode silica fiber pumped by a 1064-nn mode- locked Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. We attribute this phenomenon to transitions fom the 2G9/2 stats of Nd, which is excited by a three-photon upconversion of the IR pump beam. A line at 723 nm exhibits similar characteristics and is suspected of being of the same origin.
