Abstract

An efficient method for producing population inversion in electronic states of gaseous media is proposed and tested, which may have application to a variety of excimer and exciplex lasers. The central idea is the supersonic expansion and cooling of an electrical discharge plasma. This mechanism produces molecules in excited electronic states and concentrates population in the lowest vibrational and rotational levels of these states. As a result, this provides the possibility for maximum population inversion in excimer systems, leading to lower thresholds and optimum gain.
