Abstract

ZnO is a remarkable, multifunctional, biocompatible material with a distinctive set of properties including a direct bandgap of ~3.4eV, high transparency over the visible spectrum, a very wide range of obtainable conductivities & a strong piezoelectric response. Thus ZnO has many established & emerging applications including varistors, transparent contacts, surface acoustic wave devices and transparent thin film transistors [1]. ZnO also exhibits one of the largest families of nanostructures of all materials systems and a capacity to crystallise readily on amorphous and/or mismatched substrates [2].
