Abstract

A lossless and low crosstalk optical switch is most desirable for large scale photonic networks. To realize such a switch, a traveling-wave amplifier is integrated into the slip waveguide of a carrier-injection type optical single-slip structure(S3) switch. Fiber-to-fiber lossless and low crosstalk (an ON/OFF ratio as high as 40dB) are demonstrated in a 2 X 2 cross-bar optical switch that has integrated 4 amplifiers and 8 Y-branch optical switches.
