Abstract
Potassium tantalate niobate (KTN) was one of the first photorefractive (PR) crystals to be discovered(1,2,3). However since its discovery, very little has been done in order to explore its PR properties.
The chemical composition of KTN is given by KTa1−xNbxO3 where x denotes the niobium concentration. KTN undergoes a ferroelectric phase transition at a temperature Tc which depends on x (roughly 8.5K/1% per mole of Nb). For low Nb concentrations the phase transition is second order and it becomes first order for x ≥ 0.3.(4)
