Abstract
We report on the development of a novel use of a Michelson mirror based on fibre grating technology1 which gives flexibility in optimising the output from fibre pigtailed semiconductor lasers and rare earth doped fibre lasers. The novel Michelson mirror schemes described here can be used to optimise the output power from lasers and to filter the broadband spontaneous noise. Furthermore, in the case of external cavity semiconductor lasers, by using a displacement between the two gratings in the Michelson arrangement, FM to AM conversion could be induced and used to stabilise frequency shifts in these devices.
