Optical Technology Applications to Fast Packet Switching

Abstract

After introducing Fast Packet Switching (FPS) technique, the paper presents a near future scenario characterized by a relevant utilization of wideband services based on packetized information exchange, and analyzes a possible application of FPS technique to photonic switching. An electro-optical Fast Packet Switching node model is proposed and the main optical switching fabric requirements are defined, considering its insertion in the wide-band public telecommunication network.
