Abstract

The first demonstration of a registered multilevel Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator array has recently been reported by Tumolillo et al. [1]. The nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer in these structures is a 4-nitrophenylhydrazone (NPH) based phenoxy thermoplastic developed at The Dow Chemical Co.[2] The properties of this and related NPH phenoxy NLO polymers and monomers are described below. In addition, a study of NLO activity versus chromophore loading is presented.
