Estimates of Multiscattered Contributions to Lidar Returns Using Multi-Field-of-View Lidar Measurements

Abstract

It is well known that backscatter lidar signals contain a multiscattered component. In many cases, especially when the optical depth along the lidar path is low, the magnitude of the multiscattered component is negligible. In some cases the multiscattered component may be significant, making the classical single scattering lidar equation inappropriate for interpretation of the lidar signal. In general, it is difficult to know whether or not multiscattered contributions are important without more information than is provided by a conventional single field-of-view (FOV) lidar.
