Abstract

Equations are summarized for estimating the size distribution of particles from measurements of components of the Stokes vector for polarized radiation using a two-step inversion procedure. The inverse (Fredholm) size distribution algorithm requires that optical properties at different wavelengths be obtained from an inverse radiative transfer algorithm. The inverse radiative transfer algorithm requires that time-dependent normally-directed backscattered radiance measurements be made long after a radiation pulse illuminates an optically thick medium.
