Abstract
A balloon-borne Far Infrared Limb Observing Spectrometer (FILOS) has been developed for remote sensing of the stratosphere. Measurements of OH, H2O, O3, and HDO have been made near 101 cm−1 (99 µm). The instrument uses a triple Fabry-Perot design with a resolution of 0.002 cm−1, and is small and light-weight. A schematic diagram of the instrument is shown below. The instrument package is 24” × 48” × 19” and weighs 63 kg. The data rate is 110 bits/sec and the power consumption is 30 W. These specifications allow the instrument to be installed on the service floor of the JPL gondola, where it can participate in joint balloon flights with larger payloads.
