Abstract
A compact lidar system is being developed to measure the mesospheric sodium layer from the space shuttle. The lasers, telescope, batteries and data acquisition system are mounted in three Get-a-Way Special (GAS) canisters. By mixing the 1064 nm and 1319 nm outputs from two YAG lasers in a LiIO3 crystal, the sum frequency is generated at the sodium D2 resonance wavelength (589 nm).
