Fast and direct measurement of longitudinal birefringence distribution in conventional single-mode optical fibers

Abstract

Single-mode optical fibers exhibit very low phase birefringence, being hard to measure by current techniques. Here, we propose a distributed method to directly measure the fiber birefringence over several kilometers, in only a few seconds.
