Abstract

Due to the rapid growth in computer bandwidth requirements, local area networks (LANs) will soon require backbone links exceeding 10 Gbaud in bandwidth. Single channel fiberoptic links, which have traditionally been used in the LAN environment, may not be suitable for the required bandwidth, distance, and cost.
