Abstract

In lightwave analog transmission systems, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) are very useful for compensating the transmission and branching losses. However, analog signal transmission over 1.3-μm-optimized single-mode-fiber in the wavelength region around 1.55 μm, which is coincident with the EDFA’s operating wavelength, causes serious degradation1 in the distortion from the combined effects of laser chirp and fiber chromatic dispersion. To overcome this problem, electrical predistortion circuits2 and dispersion-compensating fiber3 have been developed, but high-quality signal transmission cannot be realized for every subscriber because these are applied in the transmitter and are optimized for the specific transmission distance, although the transmission distances between the head end and the subscribers are different.
