Abstract
High-capacity CATV broadcast and high-speed multimedia and data communications covering wide geographic areas are expected to be in great demand soon. Clearly, a network for both services would be attractive because of cost sharing. Unrepeatered lightwave networks offer desirable light-pipe features, such as flexibility, reliability, and graceful upgrade. This paper analyzes and proposes an unrepeatered lightwave dual bus that uses fiber amplifiers and narrow-band WDM for wide-area CATV broadcast and multigigabit data transport.
