Abstract

To introduce visual, intelligent, and personal communication services, NTT is planning the network evolution toward B-ISDN, as is briefly illustrated in Fig. 1. The introduction of fiber into the subscriber network is a key issue in the B-ISDN. Large business-use-oriented fiberoptic (FO) subscriber-loop systems have been developed and deployed in many countries. On the other hand, FTTH deployment is presently very difficult owing to its higher system cost and lack of attractive new services. However, full introduction of the FO system into the subscriber loop is essential for ensuring the smooth evolution toward B-ISDN.
