Abstract
A dispersion-limited optical signal requires regenerative repeaters to expand the transmission distance, while a loss-limited signal might use the much simpler technique of direct optical amplification. Semiconductor laser amplifiers have been studied in the past,1 and recently dramatic improvements in their performance have been reported.2,3
