In an optical heterodyne transmission system using a conventional single-mode (fber (SMF), the polarization drift of the signal beam is a fatal problem in obtaining stable receiver sensitivity.1 This paper reports a high-performance automatic optical fiber polarization control system by which the stabilization of the receiver sensitivity in an optical FSK heterodyne 280-Mbit/s-141-km transmission system was achieved for the first time with low insertion loss, low driving voltage, and low monitoring power.
