Mechanical properties of high-strength metal-coated fibers

Abstract

Metal-coaled silica fibers have been prepared with tensile strengths as high as 1.1 Mpsi measured on 0.5-m gauge sections ai 20% min−1 L In addition, the mean. strength of these fibers has been doubled by changing from aluminium to an aluminum coating alloy containing bismuth. The weibull distribution for this fiber is presented in Fig. 1. This information demonstrates the importance of choosing a proper coating alloy. Importantly, plastic-coated fibers have never been drawn in a furnace with either mean strengths or maximum strengths as high as those reported here.
