Abstract
There is little doubt that optical fiber will be the transmission backbone for the global information network. Its near infinite information-carrying capacity, its near zero cost, its near zero loss, and its near optimum operating wavelength for low intrinsic noise, makes it the ideal transmission medium for the next centuries, if not millinia. We have already witnessed the universal adoption of singlemode fiber as the preferred transmission media for most networks.
