Abstract
Within the past several years, it has become possible to develop a low-cost optical computer data storage peripheral due to the emergence of the video disc and the digital-audio optical pickup. The pickup is small enough that it can be incorporated into a desktop-size device that allows access in less than 200 ms to any part of over one gigabyte of information.
