Abstract

Semiconductors offer great promise as compact bistable elements for optical signal processing applications because of their strong interactions with laser light but the question of optimum material choice remains. The largest electronic nonlinearities are found in narrow gap semiconductors, while thermally induced nonlinearities in large gap materials would seem to be attractive for parallel processing.
