Abstract
Bistable Optical Devices (BOD’s) using GaAs as the nonlinear medium are viable candidates for the achievement of fast (⩽ ns), room temperature,1 low-power (mW), externally controllable2 optical switches which are easily fabricated3 and operated. Advances have been made in all of these areas and efforts are in progress to improve performances in ways that are simultaneously compatible.
