Abstract
Optical amplifiers can compensate for the loss in lightwave transmission systems, and dispersion penalties can be avoided in dispersion-shifted fibers. The overthrow of these two limitations on system length and capacity brings the subject of fiber nonlinearity to the forefront. This tutorial will cover the basic nonlinear processes that occur in optical fibers and will describe how they may affect system performance.
