Abstract
The determination of particle size distribution p(r)m, σ, r) (r= particle dimension, rm= <r>, σ = <r2>) from scattering/extinction data that can be expressed as has long been investigated and several methods have been developed. The downhill simplex is a nonlinear curve fitting technique which, by assuming a suitable two-parameter distribution f(rm, σ, r), evaluates the distribution at any three sets of (rm, σ) and then changes the parameters in a special way until q, the deference between trial data t = K·f and s = K·p reaches minimum.
