Optical signal processing based on wavelet transform

Abstract

Signal decomposition and reconstruction based on wavelet transformations have promising uses in signal analysis, detection, and data compression. A real-time multichannel optical system for signal wavelet transform has been constructed. The optical processing system is comprised of an acoustooptic cell as the input transducer, an LCD panel as filter device, and another LCD as the sampling screen. A CCD camera serves as a detector for the processed signal representation. An optical wavelet transform is performed by spatial filtering the signal with a multichannel filter written on the LCD panel. The sampled output signals can then be used to identify (detect) desirable signal properties, data compression, or input to a secondary system (neural network) for further processing. Experimental results such as signal multiresolution representation, detail signal representation and signal reconstruction are presented.
