Abstract
The display of images in three dimensions has fascinated optikers and nonoptikers alike for almost 150 years, and none is so fascinating as those that require no viewing aids (stereoscopes or spectacles) to enjoy: the autostereoscopic displays. Their development over the past 120 years is reviewed, from Swan's Crystal Cube to the computer-generated display holograms of today.
