High spectral resolution lidar measurement of vertical backscatter ratio profile of atmospheric aerosols

Abstract

Although a basic lidar system performs the expected function of light detection and ranging very well, it cannot measure atmospheric parameters directly unless the backscattered light from air molecules (Rayleigh scattering) and that from aerosol particles (Mie scattering) can be separated spectroscopically. Recently, we proposed a new high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) technique for measuring the profiles of backscatter ratio and atmospheric temperature based on Rayleigh/Mie scattering and the use of a proposed narrowband atomic blocking filter.1
