Abstract
We consider the scattering of a transverse-electric electromagnetic plane wave with a multilayered structure which is composed of linear layers of two different types constructed according to the Fibonacci sequence and a nonlinear dielectric film. In the absence of the nonlinear film and for a finite total thickness of the linear layers, the transmission coefficient goes to zero for certain ranges of the optical path length. The transmission coefficient can drop precipitously from a value comparable to unity to practically zero when the optical path length changes by a part in ten thousand. In the presence of the nonlinear film, which in a sense changes the effective optical path length with changing incident intensity, we find a highly intensity sensitive optical bistable behavior in the transmission coefficient of this multilayered structure.
