Abstract
There are two ways to improve the statistical characteristic of a passively mode-locked solid-state laser system: The first is to rearrange the initial noise intensity distribution into a more regular distribution by using an intracavity modulator, as has been done in the active–passive mode locking. The second way is to improve the discriminating ability of the saturable absorber. This improvement can be accomplished by simple modification of the geometrical configuration of the laser system, such as the colliding-pulse mode-locked (CPM) laser with an antiresonant ring.
