Abstract

A 4 × 4 crossbar space switch was constructed using a vector-matrix multiplier architecture.1 A vertical array of acoustooptic cells was utilized to deflect and steer four GRIN-lens collimated input beams horizontally through free space to a 4 X 4 matrix array of collection GRIN lenses. This array focuses the deflected beams into an array of four 4 X 1 multimode combiners vertically oriented to sum the optical power, thereby forming the cross-points of the array. This configuration has been shown capable of multicasting and wired-OR operations.
